In essence, ecotherapy is a broad term for a range of nature-based practices that support people to deepen their relationship with nature for their healing, growth, and wellbeing. This relationship is reciprocal - rooted in interbeing, where the flourishing of humans and the other-than-human natural world are intimately connected and continually shaped by one another.
Alongside your relationship with the natural world, an essential part of the eco-therapeutic process is the quality of the relationship we develop together. To support this I offer a free 30-minute call - this is an informal space for you to ask questions and explore if we may be a good fit to work together. Please contact me to book this:
The work we do together is led by your experiences with nature. As an ecotherapist, I will accompany you on your journey as your guide, offering a nurturing, compassionate, trauma-informed, and accepting space - always in partnership with nature. I will track your experiences, deeply listen and reflect back to help you delve deeper into your process of self-discovery. Having your experience held and witnessed by both nature and another person can offer the emotional safety and support you need to explore the edges of your growth and self-healing. The natural world offers such generous acceptance and holding, which I find especially supportive for those carrying trauma or navigating emotional overwhelm.
One-to-one ecotherapy sessions last 90 mins, the structure allows for spaciousness and usually involves:
Some examples of nature-based modalities we may incorporate in your ecotherapy sessions include:
Our modern world with all its stress, demands, trauma and disconnection from the natural world can be challenging. People initially seek out ecotherapy for many reasons. Maybe you are struggling with difficult emotions or relationships. Perhaps you are feeling dysregulated or numb. There may be a sense that something is missing or that you don't somehow 'fit in'. You may seek out ecotherapy as you are drawn to something different from traditional counselling and have a sense of how connecting with nature is an innately healing process.
Ecotherapy can be deeply supportive if you are experiencing any of the following (but not limited to):
It can also help us when exploring the bigger questions and longings of our life, such as:
The main location I offer 1:1 ecotherapy is at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve SSSI. This is a diverse land and seascape which dynamically changes throughout the year. There are grass and meadowlands, several groves of trees, a freshwater pond, and a sandy coastline leading to the wild ocean. There are regular bus/train links and a large car park.
If you have mobility or other accessibility needs this is something I would love us to explore this together to ensure you are able to access the landscape.
It is important to say that the work we do together is in relationship with the land and earth community and so care is always taken for the spaces we work in, honouring the other-than-human beings accompanying you on your journey — be that wild flower, tree, fox, bee, rock or river.
The benefit of working online together is that it provides more opportunity for you to deepen your relationship with your local nature spaces. Online sessions also offer more flexibility with the times we can meet, and can also suit people who may at times not be able to leave their home for health reasons. Some people chose to do blended sessions – alternating between an online session, and then a session on the land. It is about finding what works best for you.
During online sessions you are invited to start with a guided grounding practice, to bring you into your body. There will be opportunity for you to check-in and we can explore what is emerging for you in your growth and healing journey, from an eco-therapeutic perspective.
If your location allows, you can spend some time outside in nature as part of the session. But if your location does not allow this it is OK, we are nature and we can be with nature through our bodies, our inner nature, the imaginal, our creativity, and our living spaces. We can also explore what has emerged for you during any solo time you have spent in nature outside of the session, if that was possible.
Online sessions cost £50 for 75 mins.
I have limited concession rates for those experiencing financial hardship, please contact me for details.
Please contact me with any questions. I will send you further information including how to schedule a free, no obligation, Zoom call to discuss how ecotherapy could work for you.
